Day Retreat

“Though in the world there is strife, here may there be love”

This line is not an invitation to turn away from the world or create a bubble of false refuge. Rather, it points to the possibility of cultivating a community grounded in shared values—a place where we draw inspiration, clarity, and courage so that we can turn towards the world with greater wisdom and compassion.

On this Day Retreat, we will explore its meaning through the lens of an important Buddhist teaching: the Four Samgrahavastus, the “means of unification” or “bases of sympathy.” These four qualities—generosity, kindly speech, beneficial activity, and exemplification—offer practical methods for building, sustaining, and renewing a harmonious spiritual community.

Together, through short talks and group discussion, meditation, and a concluding puja, we will explore how the spirit of the Dedication Ceremony can become a lived reality—both within our community and in the wider world we return to.  During the day, we will reflect on how these qualities help us create the conditions in which love, understanding, and ethical clarity can flourish, even in a world marked by conflict and division.

Who's it for?  This day retreat is open to anyone who has already done a course with Scarborough Triratna Buddhist Group.   

Accessibility: Snainton Village Hall is accessible to wheelchair-users, including toilet and car-parking space.  

Refreshments: hot drinks and biscuits provided. Bring and share lunch (more about this in the joining information nearer the time.) 

Cost: £25 booking fee, and any additional donation you can afford on the day would be very much appreciated.  Please do get in touch with us if you can’t afford the booking fee, we don’t want anyone missing out because of lack of funds.
