Welcome to the Scarborough Triratna Buddhist Group

We are dedicated to exploring and practicing the teachings of Buddhism in our everyday lives. Whether you're new to Buddhism or have been practicing for years, you'll find a welcoming and supportive environment.

Our group gathers regularly for meditation instruction and practice, as well as Buddhist teaching and discussion.  We believe in the power of mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom to bring about positive change in ourselves and the world around us.

Join us as we journey together on the path of awakening, cultivating inner peace, understanding, and kindness, and developing spiritual friendship.  We welcome everyone over 18, regardless of background or experience.

Our Community

Our Community

We teach Buddhism and meditation to the people of Scarborough and the North Yorkshire coast.

We are a growing thriving community of people local to Scarborough and the surrounding area,  who are meditating together and exploring the Buddha's teachings and how to bring them into our every day lives.

Scarborough Buddhist Group is part of the worldwide Triratna Buddhist Community which was founded in 1968 by Sangharakshita, an English Buddhist monk who spent 20 years in India absorbing the depth and breadth of the Buddhist teachings.

Upayadevi is pictured 3rd from left on the front row.

In September 2024, the Scarborough Buddhist Group welcomed back Upayadevi, newly ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order and a leading figure in the Scarborough Buddhist Group; to find out more about ordination, click here.

Names given at ordination are often both descriptive and aspirational, and Upayadevi means ‘goddess or queen of skilful means’. To be a ‘devi’ in Buddhism one’s whole being radiates and shines particular qualities consistently out into the world. In the case of Upayadevi, she will radiate skilful means – the ability to appeal to people’s sensitivities to bring out the best in them.

Essentially, in being ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order, which takes several years of training, Upayadevi is committing to arranging her life around what she has decided is of greatest value – the Three Jewels of Buddhism - the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.

Upayadevi’s ordination is not only important and meaningful to her but is also wonderful for the Scarborough Buddhist Group, which has been a significant context in Upayadevi’s training for ordination, since moving to Scarborough three years ago. Funded by Generosity

Funded by Generosity

Our community is based on dāna, the Sanskrit term for generosity – people giving their time and energy to create something together.

We charge minimal amounts for our activities and aim to offer them open-handedly. We’re able to do this because people generously give money and time to establish and maintain everything we enjoy at the Scarborough Triratna Buddhist Group.

The Morning Puja beautifully condenses the essentials of why we make the effort to practice the Dharma.

It takes about ten minutes, and is followed by an open sit of one's own choice, for those who can stay on. We end with the verses again and close the Zoom at 8.50am. Feel free to leave as and when you need to.
